DESCRIPTION
Verbeel ding (Piece of Mind), a multifunctional, timeless and reliable piece of children’s furniture. Verbeel ding can be placed on different sides to change the function. What it exactly is, is up to the child. A chair is in a quick turn changed into a table or comfort chair.
Verbeel ding stimulates the children’s imagination, because of its open structure and many-sided use. The child has his or her own piece of furniture fully for him or herself. You can ‘look’ with your hands by feeling, touching and experiencing.

FURNITURE TO PLAY WITH

This product was designed for the HEMA Design Challenge 2006. The idea for this project actually came from my own childhood memories. My parents always use to tell me when I was young: "look with your eyes, not with your hands". As a designer I always 'look' with my hands and I have always done it that way. The same thing goes for children, because this is the way they experience new things. They learn by doing and the best way of learning is actually having fun while doing so. Therefore the starting point for the Verbeel ding was to create a multifunctional piece of furniture to play around with.

Here's a brief explanation. Verbeel ding is a wordplay of two Dutch words: verbeelding and ding. Verbeelding which means imagination, but the last part of this word contains ding, which means thing. Verbeel ding is hard to translate, but could be translated as fantasthing or imagi nation, but for me 'Piece of Mind' covers the load.
