DESCRIPTION
Within a public place or workplace is a great need to create your own place, without disconnecting yourself completely from the environment. The ‘Feston Frame’ is a new generation of seating where product and space merge into one. The result is a secluded spot, where the user can manifest himself or herself. The piece of furniture provides protection and gives a sense of private space. The ‘Frame’ does not only define its own space, but also the context in which the frame is situated . By combining multiple Feston Frames, the frames can be put down as a common or individual user space.

FRAMING YOUR SPOT
The Feston Frame owes its name to the characteristic Feston stitch. This stitch protects the rubber coating on the steel tubes and provides loop holes to string the cord which being used as the 'functional' part of the Frame. There's more cord at the spots where the material is most needed. This means that lines at eye level on the front panel are more compressed to create a more private feeling. The weaving in the seat and the backrest are obviously narrower from a functional point of view.

MAKING THE FESTON FRAME
Feston Frame was quite a hands-on project. The final prototype was made with the help of Van der Sluis in Culemborg, The Netherlands. VDS sponsored the frame part in Feston Frame, namely the tube bending, rubber coating and engineering. The Feston part was made by hand with the help of family and friends. Also the making brings people together. I love the details and materialisation, but later on proposals were made to simplify the soft part of the design. The piece went almost into production at a major Dutch furniture brand, but then the financial crisis ruined the entire plan. A big pity, but a great experience.
